School & College Interior Design

Room to learn and grow.

Build an interior brief around the way your institution teaches, learns and works. Archspace plans school and college spaces with room use, furniture, storage, circulation and everyday maintenance considered together.

Schools

School interiors for everyday learning.

Start with the age groups, teaching activities and number of learners each space needs to support. Classrooms, libraries, activity rooms and administration areas should be planned as parts of the school day, with circulation and supervision discussed alongside the interior design.

  • Develop classroom layouts around teaching formats, furniture and storage requirements.
  • Plan library, activity and shared spaces around their intended use.
  • Review finish durability, cleaning needs and age-appropriate details with the institution's team.

Colleges

College interiors for study, collaboration and campus life.

A college brief may bring lecture rooms, seminar spaces, libraries, studios and administration together. Discuss the balance between focused study, group work and shared facilities so the interior scope reflects the academic programme and how the campus operates.

  • Plan teaching rooms and seminar spaces around seating, presentation and access needs.
  • Consider individual and group study settings, storage and power requirements in libraries and shared areas.
  • Coordinate specialist laboratories, workshops or studios with equipment suppliers and the relevant technical teams.

Your project brief

Plan the work around the academic calendar.

Share the spaces in scope, occupancy, available plans and teaching calendar. Together, these establish the priorities for a new fit-out or refurbishment and the constraints that need to be resolved before a programme is agreed.

  • Identify essential work, possible phases and areas that must remain in use.
  • Discuss accessibility, egress and building requirements with the responsible specialists.
  • Confirm furniture, services, audiovisual systems and specialist-package responsibilities in writing.

Before we begin

Your questions, answered.

Can the project cover only a few classrooms or a library?

Yes. Share the spaces you want to change and their existing condition. The brief can be defined around selected areas rather than an entire school or college.

Can furniture be considered as part of the design?

Furniture layouts, dimensions and storage needs can be included in the planning discussion. Design, procurement, installation and any specialist items must be identified in the agreed proposal.

Can laboratory or workshop interiors be included?

These spaces require a clear equipment and technical brief. Interior work must be coordinated with the institution, relevant engineers and specialist suppliers; their systems and responsibilities should be separately documented.

Can refurbishment take place during a term break?

The academic calendar can guide the preferred work window, but feasibility depends on the extent of work, approvals, access and material lead times. A programme can be agreed after these requirements are reviewed.

Project scope and specialist coordination
  • Education interiors are scoped by the rooms and work expressly included in the proposal; a campus masterplan or new-building construction is a separate brief.
  • Specialist laboratories, workshop equipment, fire systems, structural changes and statutory requirements need relevant specialist review and coordination.
  • No affiliation, educational accreditation or authority approval is implied by interior-design services.
